Reasons for using ICTs within our learning environment.

(I have included a link to my concept map as there are many other reasons for including ICTs within the classroom)

Reason One

The most important reason that I am using ICTs within the classroom and school environment is so that you as a parent can be a bigger part of your childs learning. Through the use of ICTs you can be truly involved in your childs journey, be in contact easier with myself and have input into your childs education on the ground level. This is supported in the following article:       http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2140005/

How will I do this?

I will be incorporating a Daily Diary type device in the classroom, where by the students at the beginning of each day can write about their night at home and at the end of the day can write about their day at school. I will be letting the children know that this will be emailed to their parents at the end of each week as a way of including you all in their activities and also giving children opportunities to practice writing and communicating with others.

(Historical Skills - Chronology, terms and Concepts - Sequence familiar objects and events - ACHHSO32) (ACARA,2013)

This tool works both ways, I can write comments to you in the email and you can email back comments - this is encouraged, especially for parents who find it hard to find the time to contact me during the day :)

Here is an example of what this Daily Diary will look like in practice.........................

Reason Two

The second reason for integrating ICTs into our general learning environment at this time, is to allow children to bring parts of their own individual families culture to our classroom.

How will we do this?

In order to do this it is important that each child has the same opportunities and access to ICTs.  Children at our school have equal access to experience the latest technology while they are at school, but it is very important to note that  access to ICTs for children at home is quite varied, with some children not even having access to a computer in their home environment. With this in mind, we have developed a plan to give children access to a digital camera that also works as a video camera for a week in their own homes. While each child has this camera in their possession, our idea is that they will make film and take photos of the parts of their family and outside school life that they would like to share with their class. After each child has recorded the important parts of their life, they will then make a Digital Story type multimodal document using Power Point and Magisto in class putting words that describe their own life in their own place. Once each child has created their multimodal presentation, as a class, we will watch each of the presentations, making observations regarding the differences of housing, family structure and recreation. (Please ensure that you watch and are happy with the content of your childs film and photos before they bring them to school, if you need access to a computer to do this, please let us know)

Here is a link to Magisto so you can see the equipment we will be using:

I have attached a short video that is an example of a multi modal digital story so you can see what this will look like in practice. Your child will be given any assistance needed for this part of the task, and it is more about the process of researching our own families and getting to know each of our students better.

Reason Three -

The third reason that I would like to bring to your attention for the integration of ICTs in your childs classroom is so that even though we are living in quite a remote area, we are never out of touch with the Global Learning concept. ICTs are such an important part of the future to our children and we would not like to see any child disadvantaged because they have not been kept up to date with the ICTs revolution that is the way of learning in the world today. We would like to discuss the history of our country and our families with the children and be able to show them real life examples of the changes that have occurred and are still occurring as our world become progressively more linked via technology.

How will we do this?

Through the use of search engine Google, and our class computers, we will research past, present and future family traditions, recreation and communications. We will have the capacity to all veiw these and discuss them at the same time using our class Interactive White Board.

I have included a picture below demonstrating what our Interactive White Board looks like in practice.

Brofenbrenners Microsystems demonstrates the very close and valuable links between a childs school, their teachers, their home life and their parents using the Ecological Systems Theory.

(Bronfenbrenner)

Situated Learning Theory (Lave) goes a long way to explain the relationship between the childs home environment and their ability to learn. This theory was based on the Social Development Theory of Vygotsky where children learn through social interactions.
